Roku steps in the market for smart home devices

Roku introduced a whole portfolio of smart home products designed to be integrated with the well-known video streamer and managed via your TV, broadening the breadth of its home entertainment ambitions. Starting on October 17, Walmart will be the only place you can get the entire product range, including automatable LED lights, a colour-changing light strip, a smart plug, a doorbell camera, and many other smart home cameras. The products are created in collaboration with Wyze, a low-cost smart home firm.

Unlike the streaming boxes, wireless speakers, and soundbars that make up Roku’s current hardware assortment, these new smart home devices do more than just enhance the quality of video and audio. The Roku TV operating system will first allow customers to see a video stream from the Roku video doorbell. Additionally, according to Roku, the lineup will work with Google Assistant, Roku Voice, and Alexa starting in early November. For controlling smart gadgets, an iOS and Android mobile app called Roku Smart Home will be offered.

The initial lineup of Roku smart home devices

  • Roku floodlight camera
  • Roku video doorbell and chime
  • Roku smart bulbs (white and colour)
  • Roku smart light strips
  • Roku indoor and outdoor smart plugs
  • Roku indoor and outdoor cameras
  • Roku indoor camera 360 degrees

Tens of millions of homes utilise the Roku platform, the top-selling smart TV OS in the US. Now, we’re expanding our ecosystem to include products and services that will power the contemporary smart home, said Mustafa Ozgen, president of devices at Roku. Our business is expanding naturally into the smart home market, and we’re delighted to work with Walmart to make the experience straightforward and reasonably priced, Ozgen added.

In addition, a subscription plan for cameras is mentioned in a news release from Roku. This plan includes access to cloud video recording history, smart alarms, and package arrival notifications, but the cost wasn’t disclosed in time for publication.

Although Wyze’s and Roku’s prices aren’t precisely the same, they typically seem to be within a few dollars. The floodlight camera is one of a few products with more noticeable pricing variations. While Wyze’s variant is presently available for just $79.99 when purchased directly, Roku’s version is $99.99.

The deal gives Roku an immediate on-ramp into the smart home industry in addition to getting rebranded Wyze-made products into Walmart, enabling the firm to concentrate on the software that will sync everything with your TV.
