The BMW Group and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), today announced a strategic partnership to build cloud software that can be customised and will make it easier to distribute and manage data from millions of linked vehicles. The software, which will form the foundation of the BMW Group’s next cloud-based vehicle data platform, will be utilised by the manufacturer for the first time by the BMW Group.
The new software will eventually be made accessible to other automakers, giving them the ability to quickly integrate vehicle data sources, speed up the development of vehicle and fleet application features, and enhance life cycle management, all while providing cutting-edge vehicle features and more customised driving experiences at reduced costs.
According to BMW, there are currently almost 20 million connected vehicles on the road. For its upcoming portfolio of electric automobiles, BMW’s “Neue Klasse” platform will incorporate the AWS software. According to Nicolai Krämer, vice president of vehicle connectivity platforms at the BMW Group, this platform will process almost treble the volume of vehicle data compared to the current generation of BMW cars.
The jointly created solution by the BMW Group and AWS gathers fleet intelligence data and signals from BMW vehicles, then securely processes and routes the data on the cloud. The BMW Group ensures that its customer data is safeguarded and processed in line with data privacy laws and customer choices by utilising AWS’s cloud architecture.
The AWS cloud platform, according to Amazon, provides a simple method to manage big fleets of vehicles, collect vehicle data, and enhance the maintenance and repair process. Amazon said it is targeting other automakers as potential customers for its software. According to Amazon, the platform can help automakers provide advanced vehicle features and more tailored driver experiences at reduced prices.
The first company to gain from this jointly created AWS software, which will be a component of the AWS for Automotive offering, is the BMW Group. This technology will provide automakers with what they need to create the following generation of software-centric platforms.
