Ubisoft resumes releasing games on steam

Nearly four years after turning its attention to Epic Games Store and its own Connect launcher, Ubisoft will resume distributing its games on Steam. First up is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, one of the publisher’s most successful games of recent years. On December 6, the game will be available on Steam. Later, the free-to-play city-building game Anno 1800 will be available on Steam.

Leaks, such as code for Ubisoft’s own Connect launcher containing listings for Steam versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Roller Champions and a subsequent Steam database listing for Roller Champions, have pointed to this development.

Just as Ubisoft releases the game’s last content update, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be available on Steam. Eivor’s story will come to a close in The Last Chapter, which will also be released on December 6th. It will also tie up some loose ends. However, Ubisoft stated that it “realised that the depth of the game gave us limited options to make replayability unique and rewarding.”

“We’re constantly evaluating how to bring our games to different audiences wherever they are, while providing a consistent player ecosystem through Ubisoft Connect,” says Ubisoft spokesperson Jessica Roache to Eurogamer.

Previously, Ubisoft stated that it was a business decision to abandon Steam. On Ubisoft’s own PC storefront, where it does not have to pay Valve a 30% cut of sales, pre-orders for The Division 2 increased by six times. However, it appears that Steam’s broad appeal and widespread use prevailed in the end. It’s possible that Ubisoft sees the value in increasing the accessibility of its games on Steam Deck as well.

Additionally, at that time, Ubisoft pulled Anno 2070, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD, Silent Hunter 5:Space Junkies, Battle of the Atlantic, and others appear to be currently available for purchase. According to Roache, Space Junkies is gone forever because it was a multiplayer-only game, while some of these games were temporarily removed due to the demise of their online multiplayer services.
