Apple USB-C – The European Union has demanded that all phones sold in its member countries utilise the port if they have a physical charger, and Apple has now made clear that a USB-C-equipped iPhone will be released. Apple’s senior vp of international marketing, Greg Joswiak, responded, “Obviously, we’ll have to comply; we have no option,” when asked by Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal if the company will replace Lightning.
Joswiak didn’t appear thrilled with how governments around the world are handling this issue when he spoke at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Tech Live event. The company and the EU disagreed ten years ago when the EU was pushing for micro USB connectors, he claimed. According to him, Apple took a different approach to the issue from the regulatory body, whose goal was to limit the variety of power adaptors users used to make life easier for them.
He made it absolutely clear that Apple is unhappy about being forced by the law to make the change. Joswiak went into great detail about how Apple has always opted to opt a unique way and trust its engineers rather than be coerced into embracing hardware standards by legislators before admitting that the firm must abide by the law.
Additionally, he asserted that the issue of standardisation has been mostly resolved by charging bricks with detachable connections and that upgrading the iPhone from Lightning to USB-C would generate a significant amount of e-waste.
