Over the past few weeks, Apple and Google have announced major updates to their virtual wallet platform.
Samsung also wants the wallet app to act as a digital key hub for your car or home. This is a feature already available on the iPhone. The company is working with nine home security companies on virtual house keys and says Samsung Wallet will also integrate with its SmartThings platform. When it comes to car keys, Samsung Wallet supports digital car keys for certain BMW, Hyundai, and Genesis models. Korean Air will also be Samsung’s first digital boarding pass storage partner.
What can you expect from the Samsung wallet app?
According to Samsung’s press release, Galaxy users can save the following in the Samsung Wallet app:
- Payment Cards
- Loyalty cards and membership card passwords
- Digital key (both at home and in the car)
- Korean Air boarding pass
- Digital ID (appeared later this)
- Monitor cryptocurrency portfolio through Samsung blockchain wallet
The fine print states that the availability of these features depends on the market and the Galaxy device you are using.
Samsung Wallet is currently available on some Galaxy phones in the US, UK, and Europe, and Samsung Pay is running Android 9 and above. However, not all features are available on all phones. Some digital car keys require a short-range UWB connection, and some digital car keys require a phone with Samsung’s eSE security hardware.
